Steavenson Falls
An easy 700 metre walk takes you to an awe-inspiring view of one of Victoria’s highest waterfalls. Plummeting 84 metres the falls have been a favourite since the 1860’s.
To get there drive to Steavenson Falls carpark, which is located 3km along bitumen on Falls Road. Alternatively take the Tree Fern Gully Trail, a scenic 3.4 one way walk from the heart of town to the base of Steavenson Falls.
Further information about Steavenson Falls and the other walking trails in Marysville and Surrounds are available from the Visitor Information Centre, so call in and pick up a map.
Keppel Falls Lookout
Keppel Falls near Marysville is a long set of cascades tumbling down the mountain side in the headwaters of the Taggerty River. To take in the full length of the falls, drive past the start of the Keppel Falls walking track and head about 800 metres further up Lady Talbot Drive. From the edge of the road you can see the white water running down the mountain on the other side of the valley. It’s hard to appreciate the scale of the falls up close, so this little detour in the car before you start your walk will give you a sense of that. Bring a pair of binoculars or a telephoto lens if you can.
Phantom Falls
That climb up the side of hill must be worth it, right? As you lug your body up another dozen steps, the sound of rushing water comes nearer and nearer, until it is almost deafening. You feel so close, like you could touch the waterfall if you brushed aside a few green fronds, but alas, the phantom falls prove elusive as ever, hidden deep amongst the tree ferns and bracken.
